She wants to change her State-given name Marzi Ingsok Gooniggle to Kes Allyntahl, but her parents told her she has to wait til she's 18. She's 16 in the story. The country where she came from doesn't allow people to choose their own names nor are they allowed to travel outside the country. In order for you to get out, you have to escape like this family did.

Well, I'm still working out the final details, but they escaped with the help of this enormous sea bird known as a Booberie bird. Kes found it when she ran off to this deserted island to live as hermit. She trained it then rode it back to the main island to get her family. Since it had a a wingspan of 10-11 meters (33-36 ft, they were rather limited on how much stuff they could take with them.
