Description

Simulacrum (plural: -cra), from the Latin simulacrum which means "likeness, similarity", used to describe an image or representation of another thing, such as a statue or a painting, especially that of a god.

In philosophy, various definitions of simulacrum have been discussed--
1)In his Sophist, Plato spoke of two steps of image-making--faithful and intentionally distorted (simulacrum).

2)The Twilight of the Idols, nineteenth-century German philosopher and classical philologist, Friedrich Nietzsche suggested that most philosophers, by ignoring the reliability of their senses and resorting to the flowery constructs of language and reason, arrive at a distorted copy of reality.

3)Modern French social theorist Jean Baudrillard argues there are 4 steps of reproduction instead of Plato's 2 --(1) basic reflection of reality, (2) perversion of reality; (3) pretence of reality (where there is no model); and (4) simulacrum, which “bears no relation to any reality whatsoever.”

4)Gilles Deleuze, another French philosopher, argues defines simulacra as "those systems in which different relates to different by means of difference itself. What is essential is that we find in these systems no prior identity, no internal resemblance."
